Last Thursday, June 23rd, Taylor Swift had a surprise for her substantial fanbase.
Swift released a brand new song based on the Delia Owens novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” titled “Carolina.”
Written specifically for the award-winning novel’s film adaptation, “Carolina” is a haunting folk song with a storyline explicitly tied to the book's plot.
This marks Taylor’s first single since the release of her 2020 album, “Evermore”.
Swift gave us more insight into the song’s storyline on her Instagram.
“About a year and a half ago I wrote a song about an incredible story, the story of a girl who always lived on the outside, looking in. Figuratively and literally.”
She continued, "The juxtaposition of her loneliness and independence. Her longing and her stillness. Her curiosity and fear, all tangled up. Her persisting gentleness… and the world’s betrayal of it. I wrote this one alone in the middle of the night and then @aarondessner and I meticulously worked on a sound that we felt would be authentic to the moment in time when this story takes place.”.
Once again, Swift demonstrates incredibly complex storytelling in the tune, including beautifully chosen vocabulary and figurative language.
“Indelible scars, pivotal marks. Blue as the life she fled.”
I had a picture of “Carolina” in my head from the first listen.
The tune includes chilling undertones and a wistful, almost magical sense to it all.
After listening, I felt as if I knew her.
The song will be featured in the film “Where the Crawdads Sing”, hitting theatres on July 15th, 2022.
